Working as a nurse in Norway

The Norwegian Directorate of Health is responsible for granting authorisation required for all categories of professions within the legally regulated health sector.

Authorisation represents a full and permanent approval, while licenses impose one or more limitations with respect to duration, independent or supervised practice/training etc.

Approval is necessary both if the education is completed in Norway and if it is completed in another country. The principal objective of the authorisation scheme is to safeguard the safety of patients and to contribute to ensuring that the population has confidence in the Norwegian health service.

Authorisation as a health professional in Norway gives entitlement to use the relevant professional title. People who do not have authorisation (or a licence) do not have the same right.
